In middle school many students including myself when I was that age, do not know how much the word retarded actually effects people. Not only does it effect many people to extremes but they really do not understand the meaning behind it. I remember when I was in sixth and seventh grade, everything was the r-word and we didnt even think twice about using it.
PRESENT:
This summer I spent a week of my time volunteering at a camp for young adults with Down Snydrome, ages 14-21. There I began to find out the severity of the hurtfulness of the r-word. These two individuals are members of the camp and talk about their views on the r-word and how it effects their lives.
When I become a teacher I will use this knowledge when working with my students. Not only as a teacher, but just in the near future in general to help "Spread the Word to End the Word." I will then help my students and peers get the knowledge of how frequently the r-word is used in every day language and how we are all different, no matter race, gender, or ethnicity. People do not understand the severity of the word, until they are put in a situation that really shows how the word hurts.
